Last full day in China. It was spent checking out the “Williamsburg” area of town that has a block of warehouses converted into galleries. My favorite was a photo gallery with images by Li Nan.
The most intriguing part of the day was when Betsy showed me a very special place to buy purses. For those who don’t know Betsy, she collects purses like others collect modern art. She took me to an unmarked building and we rang the doorbell. We open the door to a motherload of knockoff purses. It was sensory overload. I had my eye on a Marc Jacobs number that was cute and cherry red. We asked the lady how much it cost and it was probably around $70 instead of the usual $300 something they usually go for. I was still trying to buy gifts for people so I felt a pang of guilt that I was again buying something for myself. I declined. I’m still regretting that as I write this.
Our final dinner was the delicious Beijing duck again. Cheers to Betsy and Mike for taking me in this week. I felt lucky to have a chance like this. I will definitely come to visit you guys in Sinapore.
